Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? Hawaii, Nantucket, Sun Valley, London.... Can’t choose just one!

What are three words to describe your style?

1. Thoughtful

2. Restrained but fresh

3. Modern

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? Antique furniture and this very sweet hand block motif floral wallpaper. Red round flowers with green leaves, I think it was Laura Ashley. But I was an only child so one day I decided to move to the guest bedroom across the hall and paint it a buttery yellow.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? A mid century dining table with four leaves. My husband is practically outside through the French doors when we have all four leaves on the table for a large party.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be?
Pierre Yovanovitch or Joseph Durand

No room is complete without soft lighting.

People think of me as quiet, but I am really fun.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: A range of colors.

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Anything overly processed, but my hors d'oeuvre platters are about abundance. And I am much better at them than the main course.

  • A bar cabinet: Overly delicate sherry glass.

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: Taylor Swift while my daughter and I are dancing around during meal prep and then Art Pepper for dinner.

  • Working at your desk: Silence is bliss. Classical music if any.

  • Going for a run: Hip Hop - can you tell I am a Gemini yet ;)

Biggest Vice? California wines

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? Art at auction or airplane tickets.

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? I return to black, tans and white over and over. I love color but when I’m working, I prefer for the textiles to take center stage and my clothing to be a quiet backdrop.

Who is your star crush? Gosh, I don't know. George and Amal Clooney.

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it?
Interpret a style too literally.

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be? Rose Uniacke

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Integrity.

A Few Favorites:

Movie: I have to watch all Christmas movies every year. From Little Women, The Family Stone to Home Alone.

Book: I am obsessed with memoirs. I devour anything by Alexandra Fuller, Dani Shapiro and Anne Lamont.

Scent: Roma by Voyage et Cie

The fabric you always come back to: Wool sateens for dreamy drapery. I love handmade fabrics such as Schumacher's Brimfield which was inspired by an antique textile found at the Brimfield Antique Market.

Dream project: There are so many! But I grew up next to an incredible 1930s Mediterranean home that I’ve been designing in my head since I was probably seven.

Meal: Anywhere candlelight with my husband or girlfriends.

Drink: Coffee, tea or wine depending on the hour.  Heading into winter I’m into sipping whiskey neat.

Hotel: Le Pavillon de la Reine in Place de las Vosges.

Travel Destination: I’m writing this from Mexico City and feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. It is so vibrantly alive with arts and culture. I will be back.

Artist: Oh impossible to pick.. Ruth Asawa

A cause near and dear to me: My husband's close friend is the founder of Re:wild - a global wildlife conservation. I also have tried to always support access to the arts for children.

Thing to collect obsessively: I love buying Art both for Anyon Atelier and myself. I have started collecting antique ceramics - especially Robert Picault.  My mother gave away a lot of her china but I’d love to piece a tea collection back together. And I’m building a small but mighty library of all the books my husband and I have read.

Era in the history of design: 1930s California

Museum: Villa Borghese in Rome

Paint Color that always looks great: White Dove or Swiss Coffee from Benjamin Moore depending on the mood of white. Green Smoke from Farrow & Ball is surprisingly versatile.
