Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? Paris

What are three words to describe your style?
1.
Cabinet of curiosity
2. A nod to craft
3. Classic

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? My walls were upholstered in Tillet fabric, and there was a large Anglo-Indian mirror on one wall. My beds were bamboo from McGuire, and my floor was white vinyl with a large flokati rug.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house?
We bought a Robert Adam fireplace, and many Lalanne sculptures years ago directly from Claude and François-Xavier.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? I was lucky enough to work with David Hicks, Christian Badin, Barbara Wirth, and Hubert de Givenchy. But I’d love to have met the following: Renzo Mongiardino – Pauline de Rothschild – Rory Cameron

No room is complete without something made by the hand - CRAFT.

People think of me as a clean freak, but I am really a lover of organization.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Anything can be beautiful if it’s well done

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Everything but Gougère or caviar and potatoes

  • A bar cabinet: Nothing

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: Bach Partitas, Arcangelo Corelli, Les Nubians

  • Working at your desk: Can’t listen, need to concentrate

  • Going for a run: Never bring any electronics – au natural!

Biggest Vice? Organic dried mango and Fouquet dark chocolate.

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? The Stork Club Comporta

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? I love color and mixing patterns

Who is your star crush? Sam Shepard

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it?
Designing in one period.

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be?
The book that David Hicks signed and wrote a personal note.

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Always exploring the relationship between structure/organization and the opposite – especially in the garden
