Laura Lubin
If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? I would live in Montana
What are three words to describe your style?
1. Timeless
2. Approachable
3. Intentional
Tell us about your childhood bedroom? My childhood bedroom had a vibrant hand-painted floral mural above the bed, with nearly 2,000 glow-in-the-dark stars that I proudly placed there when I was 8 years old.
What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? Two custom made chairs that I bought off the showroom floor at the San Francisco Design Center. They had been rejected for the original client the designer intended them for. Newly married, we spent more than one month's rent and hauled them home in our own car.
In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? Ken Fulk. He is a designer where I am constantly in awe of his creativity and varies vastly from a space I would create. His design expands my creative edges.
No room is complete without dimmable warm white light bulbs.
People think of me as very composed and somewhat formal, but I am really ruthlessly self deprecating and would be canceled for my humor.
Things you omit from:
A flower arrangement: Carnations or anything faux dyed
An hors d’oeuvre platter: No seafood dishes, gets too hot too fast
A bar cabinet: Fernete, one too many bad mornings
A song for:
Dinner at home: Anything by Ben Rector
Working at your desk: Hozier
Going for a run: The sound of the police car siren that must be chasing me
Biggest Vice? Champagne and cheese
If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? Vintage art
Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Yes, as a mother I am into performance fabric that breathes.
Who is your star crush? Henry Cavill as he is a self proclaimed nerd...a trait I like in all men.
What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it?
Pattern on pattern on pattern
If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be?
Farrow and Ball, “How to Decorate.” It was given to me by a dear friend who is no longer with us.
For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? For its continued relevancy and a beautiful sense of function and form.
