Elliott Barnes
If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? I would love to live in Venice
What are three words to describe your style?
1. Textured
2. Rational
3. Modern
Tell us about your childhood bedroom? I grew up in a very 70’s toned room with one geometric orange, white, yellow, and silver patterned wall. The other walls were orange. This played off very traditional wooden furniture.
What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? In fact it was a table I designed in carbon fiber, I used it as a dining table and a work surface. When I sold the flat, the new owner bought the table.
In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be?
I would hire Mies Van Der Rohe
No room is complete without an area rug.
People think of me as easy going but I am really quite demanding.
Things you omit from:
A flower arrangement: Greenage
An hors d’oeuvre platter: Anything with goat’s cheese
A bar cabinet: Milk
A song for:
Dinner at home: The Melody at Night with you (Album) – Keith Jarrett
Working at your desk: Free the Mind by Johann Johannsson
Going for a run: Funkin’ for Jamaica – Tom Browne or Had It Up 2 Here – Boot Camp Clik
Biggest Vice? I have no vices just excesses and ART and BOOKS occupy the top spot
If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? Don’t know what that could feel like and I don’t internet shop. I prefer the boutique experience.
Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? My clothes reflect my mood. To make this possible the wardrobe is quite eclectic, but also rather classic
Who is your star crush? Joni Mitchell
What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it? I would never get glitzy but I see that it works on projects by others.
If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be? My sketch book from the summer of 1983 or Collage City by Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter.
For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Its simplicity and understated elegance.
