Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live?
Upstate New York, where I’ve had a weekend house for 16 years. It feels like home.

What are three words to describe your style?
1.
Eclectic

2. Intuitive

3. Tactile

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? I made a feature wall of a large-scale terracotta grid on cream. The other three walls were hunter green. At sixteen, I thought this was very chic.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? A Joe Andoe bison print.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? Albert Hadley, the first designer I ever worked with (back in 1987).

No room is complete without more lamps than you think are necessary.

People think of me as buttoned down, but I am really unbuttoned.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Baby’s Breath

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Crudite, I detest.

  • A bar cabinet: Liquor!

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: Anything Ella Fitzgerald.

  • Working at your desk: Anything Jonathan Richman.

  • Going for a run: I walk.

Biggest Vice? Ebay

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? A cashmere pullover in a color I don’t yet have.

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? I love color and own nothing black except a tuxedo.

Who is your star crush? Gregory Peck.

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it? A chandelier window.

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be?
David Adler by Richard Pratt because it was so hard to acquire!

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Not becoming a tear down.
