Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? Tangier

What are three words to describe your style?

1. Disciplined

2. Empathetic

3. Unexpected

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? I shared it with my younger brother. It had an “early American” theme, which was my mother's favorite. There was an enormous cottonwood tree outside my window, and every summer, I placed orchids and Spanish moss on its branches to imitate a tropical rainforest.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? A set of 12 original Kaare Klint mahogany dining chairs.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer/architect/landscape architect other than yourself, who would it be? William Kent, who did all three.

No room is complete without a mirror.

People think of me as intimidating, but I am really affable.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Leaves

  • A garden: Mulch

  • A bar cabinet: Paper Napkins

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: French or Brazilian standards

  • Working at your desk: Classic keyboard music from any period

  • Going for a run: House or rock music

Biggest Vice? Ordering flowers

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? More frames & sunglasses. https://cubitts.com/

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Tailored and quietly luxurious.

Who is your star crush? Kim Gordon.

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it?
Use cheap windows.

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be?
The Smaller Houses and Gardens of Versailles 1680-1815. FRENCH, Leigh Jr. and EBERLEIN, Harold Donaldson

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Quality.
