Jean Brownhill
If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? Paris
What are three words to describe your style. 1. Art 2. Plants 3. Books
Tell us about your childhood bedroom? I was obsessed with decorating my bedroom, and it was the 80’s. So my room was pastel lavender with matching wall to wall carpet that I asked for Christmas. In fact I think my granny thought I was nuts for wanting carpet for Christmas, but she got it for me anyway.
What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? I went to Cooper Union undergrad and they have an end of the year art show. The first thing I invested in was paintings for my home.
In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? Eileen Gray
No room is complete without art work.
People think of me as an extrovert, but I am really an introvert.
Things you omit from:
A flower arrangement: baby’s breath
An hors d’oeuvre platter: anything with parsley
A bar cabinet: crème de menthe
A song for:
Dinner at home: Love Supreme John Coltrane (album)
Working at your desk: Bach: The Goldberg Variations Album by Glenn Gould
Going for a run: Reborn: Kids See Ghosts Kanye West and Kid Cudi
Biggest Vice? Working...all the time
If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? Highly rated products from Amazon, that I’ve never heard of and definitely don't need.
Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Maybe they used to, now I just wear leggings!
Who is your star crush? Idris Elba
What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it? Lots of different patterns and colors. I just can’t live in a space like that every day. However, I did a project for a friend and she wanted every color and all the patterns. It was so fun to let go and indulge in so many layers and textures. She loves it, and I love it too...for her.
If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be? I have a lot of cherished and rare books, this is too hard of a question. Like asking which of my kids I’d leave behind. The answer is I would try my best to save them all.
For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? That I built and left a path for others.
